The Legend of
gulabi
Meenakari
An Ancient
alchemy
Originating in ancient Persia and travelling through Lahore to the sacred steps of Kashi, **Gulabi Meenakari** represents one of India's rarest craft techniques.
Unlike standard enameling, the Banaras style is defined by its pink enamel strokes on a base of pure silver. This unique color is achieved by painting delicate patterns using crushed glass mixed with gold oxides.
Our workshop, situated in the heart of Varanasi, preserves this Geographical Indication (GI) tagged heritage.

The 5-Step
alchemy
Base Prepping
Sheets of pure silver are hammered, molded, and shaped into the initial structural canvas.
Chilai Engraving
Intricate grooves, floral patterns, and detailed cavities are hand-carved onto the metal surface.
Enamel Application
Leadless glass enamel powders, crushed and mixed with natural metal oxides, are filled into the cavities.
Kiln Firing
The piece is fired repeatedly in a high-temperature kiln, fusing the colored glass permanently onto the silver.
Final Polishing
Polished carefully with metal cleansers and agate stones to reveal a brilliant, glossy mirror finish.

“In the fire of Kashi's furnaces, silver receives its soul in shades of rose.”
The Alchemy of Banaras
The Master
lineage & revival
Our workshop is led by National Awardee and 5th-generation master craftsman **Shri Ramesh Kumar Vishwakarma**, honored with the National Merit Award for his lifetime contribution to preserving and reviving the heritage of Banaras Gulabi Meenakari Artist.
Following the industry collapse of 2008–09, Shri Vishwakarma self-funded a personal rescue mission, successfully tracking down and retraining **35 traditional artisans** who had abandoned the craft for low-wage labor. By establishing the "Banaras Gulabi Meenakari Artist" sanctuary, he created a framework that has trained **over 680 individuals**, breaking rigid gender barriers by actively empowering rural women as master enamellers.
His masterpieces have been chosen as official diplomatic gifts by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for world leaders, including the bespoke cufflinks and matching brooch presented to US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at the G7 Summit, and the iconic "Shatranj" (Chess) Set presented at the Dubai Expo.
